Some people actually do well enough in the ingame economy, that they don't need to put any real life money in. But if $10-$20 a month or so is not a financial hardship, then WO can be well worth the extra costs of a premium sub and monthly deed upkeep.

You won't be able to "compete" in the player economy as well due to skill caps on free players, and that will prevent you from some activities like riding a horse or piloting a larger boat. It also will need more frequent repair/maintenance work on your part as decay will be much faster. You can technically play "forever" without cost - your skills will be rather severely capped however, and your properties will be more at risk of either decay or someone else paying money to claim the spot you started on.

Meantime you can also test the waters today for free on the older servers, as you can play WO without cost as long as you do not own land or get skills over 20. the first few months will be especially vibrant and exciting in a way that a WU server probably can't match, as hundreds and hundreds of players scramble to explore and claim land and build skills. If so, I would pay attention to the July 24 opening of their new server as a perfect time to jump in. It probably has more long, deep social connections, if that matters to you. If you love the idea of a game you could play daily for the next 5-10 years, and you don't mind spending a little money every month, WO might be the better option. Some of it depends on your financial situation, and some of it depends on how deeply you want to get sucked into a game. It's just an itch that I need to scratch even if I head off and play other games now and then. Hope that helps! I've been playing WO/WU off and on for eight years or so. But willingness to consult the Wurmpedia helps you not only help yourself, but also allows veteran players help you more by offering "institutional knowledge" instead of just the basics. Most of the bigger servers have players more than willing to offer help, advice, a place to stay, etc. Make sure to check out the article Your first days in Wurm Online. And make sure to bookmark it, as you will reference it quite often. You will want to do a little prep by reading the Wurmpedia. It's very grindy, so you have to commit to the long haul in my opinion.Īs far as accessibility, there is a learning curve. I played WurmOnline for a number of years, but I just couldn't keep going with the subscription.

There are other servers out there that have nice offerings, but I do not have a lot of experience with them. Not as many players on it and the terrain is a bit rough, so it will be a good challenge for a new player.

Kanga has some interesting mods I have not seen anywhere else. It's definitely a faster/higher skill gain than some out there.

Sklo is definitely more populated, if you are looking for a larger community. I play on Sklotopolis and the KangaWU servers.

There are a few really great servers out there with a decent player base. My advice is to go with Wurm Unlimited and find a good server to play with others.
